New SAR class for Norway

High speed and hefty towing pull were two key requirements for the latest SAR vessel to join the fleet of 42 boats of Redningsselkapet (RS), Norway's lifeboat institution, stationed at key locations along the extremely long and complex coastline. Named RS158 Idar Ulstein, the 22m lifeboat will be stationed at Fosnavag on the west coast of Norway on the group of linked islands just north of the peninsula of Stadt. The region has rapidly changing weather and often challenging sea conditions, and rapid response both out to sea and in the coastal leads and fjords was an important driver. It will mainly serve the coastal fleet, fishing vessels (both inshore and out to the 200 mile limit), recreational craft and general emergencies.
