Hot on the heels of its involvement in Norway's government-backed HYBRIDships research project (see pages 82-83), the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) is now inviting potential partners to join it in exploring the potential of hydrogen as a viable marine fuel. According to Kolbjørn Berge, NMA senior surveyor, this goal is "fully achievable, provided that the process is properly organised". This will involve adequate risk analysis and explosion analysis, he adds, to ensure that safety levels are equivalent to those for "conventional oil-powered machinery".
