The EU has pledged nearly NOK200 million (US$22.3 million) of funding to the AUTOSHIP project, a four-year campaign to develop, build and operate two remotely controlled and autonomy-capable short-sea/ coastal vessels. The grant, arranged as part of the EU's ongoing Horizon 2020 programme, indicates a fair amount of confidence in the projects goals, which include the creation of a roadmap for wider adoption of commercial autonomous solutions across the EU's fast-growing inland and coastal transport sector. Said solutions will also have to demonstrate a good grasp of cybersecurity and self-diagnostic/prognostic capabilities.
