Busy times for Fassmer

Fassmer, currently one of Germany's busiest specialist small vessel yards, is completing the LNG-powered, 75m x 16.8m survey, wreck location and research ship Atair for spring 2020 delivery to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg. Fassmer is versed in the complexities of LNG ship construction, following its involvement with AG EMS in building Germany's pioneering first LNG ferry, the 83m Helgoland, in 2015 (see Ship & Boat International March/April 2016, pages 36-37). The €114 million (US$127 million) multipurpose Atair is just the first in a planned trio of LNG dual-fuel newbuilds. Replacing a 1987-built namesake, it is being outfitted on a hull completed earlier this year by German Naval Yards in Kiel, which also installed (at Fassmer's request) some initial equipment including LNG tank, piping and generators.
