For any prospective operator, selecting the right type of vessel required for the outer Round 2 and Round 3 wind farms can be a somewhat bewildering choice. The operational side often being confused or blended with the technical and commercial aspects does not help matters.However, one issue is very clear to naval architects, when looking at the statement of requirements (SOR) for any of the vessels that are to be considered for such duties: the predominant factor that drives the entire design is the ability to operate safely, and with low accelerations, in an ever-increasing wave height. The magic formula of 'HS=3.0m' is now readily used in all the SORs being issued - this being a 3.0m significant wave height.
