The application of new materials wil play a critical role in enabling the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing technologies, according to a panel of industry executives who spoke at a recent conference organized by SEMI and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. George Scalise, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, believes that as the chip industry goes through the later stages of CMOS scaling, "we'll be introducing some new process technology that has not been used in the past and some new device structures that have never been even looked at because we didn't need them."
