A.G. Dawson is one of the pioneers of modern tsunami and paleo-tsunami research. Following Atwater (1987), Dawson and coauthors (compare Dawson et al., 1988, 1991; Dawson 1994, 1996, 1999; Dawson and Shi, 2000, Hindson et al., 1996; Shi et al., 1995) repeatedly carried out research on the sedimentary character of onshore tsunami deposits, initially based on only very limited field experience, but later on a wider base of observations including those from modern tsunamis. These research papers exclusively deal with fine grain tsunami deposits, while coarse grain and boulder deposits are neglected. In the most recent publication by Dawson and Stewart (2007) the scope is widened to include paleo-tsunami deposits of pre-Quaternary periods as well as the offshore sediments delivered by tsunamis, both certainly very important fields of research.
