INSURERS EMBRACE RISK MANAGEMENT

Marine insurance underwriters, alarmed at the way the claims graphline is moving relentlessly upward, both for hull and cargo losses, have decided they can no longer wait in hope for a diminution in Acts of God or cases of human error. They intend to be more active in risk management and loss prevention, and have started to take positive steps in this direction. This, basically, was the theme of the 2006 annual conference of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) in Tokyo, which brought together nearly 400 underwriters from worldwide markets.
