General Atomics Chosen for Carrier Arresting Gear Development

General Atomics, selected last year to develop the Electro-magnetic Aircraft Launching System for U.S. aircraft carriers, has been tapped to develop and build a new system that will trap aircraft as they land onboard a carrier. The Naval Air Systems Command awarded the San Diego-based company a five-year, $95.8 million contract for the system development and demonstration of the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), designed to replace the current hydraulic arresting gear used on aircraft carriers that halt aircraft with cross-deck cables snagged by a plane's tailhook. Tailhooks still will be used, but the machinery that controls and operates the arresting wires will be replaced by a new design.
