Signaling its intent to improve relations with Indonesia while still stressing a commitment to human rights, the U.S. government is cautiously resuming military trade ties with its old ally. As public goodwill rises following U.S. relief efforts in the aftermath of the tsunami that devastated parts of Indonesia, Washington is renewing relations with Jakarta, gaining an ally in the war on terrorism and bolstering its influence in a strategically vital region of southeast Asia. In November, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice used her authority to waive a decade-old arms embargo on Jakarta, paving the way for renewed military cooperation with the United States.
