Maritime Microscope: MARAD's new MarView Web portal offers unprecedented view of maritime transportation system

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has created what officials at the agency are calling the "Google" of the maritime industry, a commercial data-driven, Web-based portal that will allow anyone with access, including ships at sea, to find detailed information on the condition and performance of the U.S. Marine Transportation System, much of it in real time. "The MarView system is one of the best and most accurate monitors of merchant shipping in the United States," said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. "MarView shows that you can take already-available commercial information sources and turn them into something that's useful for both industry and government."
