The Face of American Sea Power

Since Nov. 25, 1961, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVAN/CVN 65) - or The Big E -has been the face of American sea power. Many factors can explain this phenomenon. First, the ship, whose keel was laid in 1958 at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Va., was designated to receive the name of the famed aircraft carrier (CV 6) that served throughout the war in the Pacific and would become the most decorated U.S. Navy ship of World War II. As the eighth ship to bear the name, this new carrier would be the Navy's first nuclear-powered flattop and longest warship - the latter a distinction it still holds.
