Ice-related problems plague those operating in polar regions, including the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and oil and gas industries. 1. Ice buildup adds topside weight and can seriously degrade reserve buoyancy and stability. 2. Chemicals and coatings can counteract ice accretion. 3. Offshore structures can be enclosed, but limiting ventilation may increase risk of explosion.
