Although the title suggests a narrative history, this book dissects the phases of an amphibious campaign in distinct chapters and provides historical examples of the phases: planning and preparation, passage to the battle, pre-landing operations, securing the beach, consolidation and exploitation, logistics, withdrawals, equipment and the future of amphibious operations. A discussion of the future is timely, given the U.S. Marine Corps' current re-emphasis on the Pacific after 13 years of land warfare.
