Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has completed a contract with Singapore's Ministry of Defence for the procurement of two TKMS HDW Type 218SG submarines for the Republic of Singapore Navy. Press reports indicate that the deal was worth $1.36 billion, which includes training and logistics support. The new submarines will be built at the TKMS yard in Kiel, Germany, and the combat system will be co-developed by Germany's Atlas Elektronik and Singapore's ST Electronics. Both submarines will be delivered to the Singapore Navy by 2020 and replace the three used Challenger-class (formerly Sjoormen-class) boats procured from Sweden.
