Readiness Recovery

An aviation readiness crisis, particularly in the legacy F/A-18 Hornets and AV-8B Harriers, is affecting the Marines' congressio-nally mandated role as the nation's force in readiness. 1. Many of the legacy aircraft are at or over their expected flight hour limits, and suffer from a shortage of available spare parts. 2. Additional funding from Congress and support from the Navy with parts, depot maintenance and the transfer of 30 low-flight-hour F/A-18Cs is helping to alleviate the shortfall. 3. In the meantime, the Corps is pushing aggressively to finish the acquisition of new fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and add high-technology systems that will give them all multimission capabilities.
