Bioengineered Food-Safety and Labeling

Bills proposing to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) to address the safety and labeling of bioengineered foods have been introduced in both houses of the U.S. Congress. The Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act (GEFSA) would make all transgenic components of bioengineered foods subject to premarket review as food additives. The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act (GEFRKA) would require labeling of food that "contains a genetically engineered material, or was produced with a genetically engineered material". Many aspects of these bills are inconsistent with well-established principles of food regulation.
