In 1953, Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher, two of the 20th century's premier naturalists, embarked on a 30,000-mile exploration of what Peterson, in the title of their account of the journey, called "wild America." They started at Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland, largely to witness the huge colonies of gannets, murres, and kittiwakes (seabirds were Fisher's spe-cialty).
