As speaker of the House, Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) provokes strong reactions. Republicans like to energize the party faithful by pinning her name to Democratic policies they oppose. But as far as most U.S. scientists are concerned, Pelosi can do no wrong as the leader of congressional Democrats.rnLast week, at three events held within an 8-hour span on a single day in Washington, D.C., the community paid tribute to Pelosi's successful advocacy of bigger research budgets and, more broadly, the importance of supporting innovation in a time of economic turmoil. In turn, Pelosi told scientists they need to work even harder to sustain the gains made in the recent stimulus package, the 2009 spending bill, and the president's budget request for 2010 (Science, 6 March, p. 1274).
