Reviewing is said to be one of the thankless tasks of academe, so let's fix that right away with a loud and heartfelt "thank you!" from the authors and editors of Science, Technology, & Human Values to our outstanding reviewers. Without your guidance, insight, and dedication the journal would not exist. Reviewers are the voice of community expertise, speaking at a critical moment to authors and editors about the quality and potential of manuscripts. To authors they offer advice, appreciation, ideas, repairs, and the critical sustenance to undertake yet another round of revisions. Editors listen in on this communication to weigh the merits and assess the possibilities of a paper: are the ideas original, the evidence persuasive, the reasoning sound, the writing lucid, and the take-home messages compelling? As we editors think about the manuscript before us, we ask if the suggested revisions are feasible: can the author take the paper to a better place? In all this subtle judgment, we read reviews as carefully as we read manuscripts, and we rely on the knowledge and sensibilities of reviewers for guidance. This small recognition of seeing your name printed in the list below falls far short of the recognition you deserve for your vital contributions to our field. And so as we send our heartfelt thanks to you, we also invite you to share it with those at your home institutions who are in a position, locally, to evaluate and recognize your work. Everything we know about the dynamics of knowledge-intensive organizations tells us that in the absence of recognition and incentives for them to persist, peer review and other crucial practices can begin to fade away. Peer review and publication, in current and evolving forms, is of the essence of scholarship: cheers to peers for making this possible.
