Catastrophism: The Apocalyptic Politics of Collapse and Rebirth

This short volume is an exemplary contribution to the growth of a mature, self-reflective left. It consists of four chapters, one by each of the co-authors of the volume; an Introduction by Sasha Lilley; and Doug Henwood's foreword. In the Introduction we are told that the book "evolved out of many conversations within the Retort Collective . ..", described as "providing radical antinomian comradeship, but eschewing any party lines or set positions" (13). Its central message is for the left: catastrophism-the assumption that society is headed for total collapse-is bad analysis and leads to ineffective politics.
