Intellectual property regulation and international trade: national and global economic perspectives

The issue of intellectual property rights (IPR) andrninternational trade has drawn increasing attentionrnamong scholars, global managers and policymakersrnin recent decades. After screening the ISIrnWeb of Science/Science Citation Index (SCI),rnabout 160 scientific publications from the periodrn1990–2007 could be identified from the keywordrnsearch terms ‘TRIPS, WTO, IPR or TRADE’ andrnreasonable combinations of these terms (searchedrnin January 2008). The average growth in this periodrnhas doubled the absolute number of published itemsrnin each year, with a particularly strong increase atrnthe turn of the century. Recently, the issue has alsornbeen embraced by anti-globalization movementsrnand even public opinion.1
