SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHODS FOR ESTIMATION OF CEFPODOXIME PROXETIL IN ORAL SOLID DOSAGE FORMS

Two simple, sensitive and reproducible spectrophotometric methods (Method A and Method B) are developed for the estimation of Cefpodoxime proxetil (CEP) in bulk drug as well as in pharmaceutical dosage forms (tablets). Method A is based on the reduction of ferric ions to ferrous ions by cefpodoxime which in the presence of potassium ferricyanide produces a blue chromogen having λ_(max) at 740 nm. Method B is based on the formation of red chromogen (λ_(max) at 507 nm) when cefpodoxime is diazotized with nitrous acid. The results of analysis were validated statistically and by recovery studies. The proposed methods can be successfully employed for the routine determination of CEP in tablets.
