Psychological organizations leapt to the defense of National Institute of Mental Health Director Steven Hyman after he was blindsided with accusations that his institute shortchanges research on mental illness. In a report made more prominent by a front-page appearance in USA Today, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) said NIMH has "failed in its primary mission to support research into schizophrenia, manic-depressive illness and other severe mental illnesses."
