INDIAN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY, ITS CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE CHALLENGES

The Pharmaceutical Industry in India has now become one of the front rank industries in the knowledge based technology driven sector. However, India being a vast country with the population of about 100 crores Indian Pharma Industry even today caters to the need of about 25 - 30% of the population. The remaining vast majority of the population is yet to receive proper health care. But the Pharmaceutical Industry in India ranks very high in the world in terms of technology and also the quality range of medicines manufactured. Most of the essential medicines are now made in India. The Pharmaceutical Industry in India, however, has excellent manufacturing and distribution facilities. Many of the manufacturing units are approved by the Regulatory Authorities from U.S.A. The industries' track record of development particularly in the area of chemical synthesis of various drug molecules is excellent. The Pharmaceutical Industry in India now exports variety of sophisticated bulk drugs and formulations to various countries in the world.
