NOISE LEVEL IN AND AROUND BURLAA TOWN OF ORISSA

Noise is comparatively a well-recognised problem in urban environments. A survey was carried out to know the noise levels in and around Burla town of Orissa, India. This survey reports the noise level measurements in different zones as per the National Ambient Air Quality Standard, i.e. silence, residential, commercial and industrial. Some traffic sites were also investigated. The measured noise levels in most of the sampling sites were below or nearer to the national standard. The noise level at two sites i.e. Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital (VSS MCH) and Hirakud Dam Power House (HDPH) exceeded the national standard. It is recommended to make wearing of earmuffs mandatory as personal protective equipment for all employees engaged in HDPH and subject them to both audiometric and health examination in regular interval.
