Impact of packaging on storability of seed of Soybean (Glycine max L.)

The Jute canvas (JC) and Poly-lined Jute Canvas (PL-JC) bag were supplied to the farmers and safe seed storage technology was demonstrated to them. Initial seed samples were collected in the month of October and final in June during every years. Initial seed germination was ranged from 72 to 90%, 80 to 98% and 59 to 91% during 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05, respectively. Seed stored in PL-JC bag had higher final germination and lower electrical conductivity recorded after 9 month storage period than the seed stored in JC bag during all the three years. Moisture content of seed stored in PL-JC bag was maintained at same level of initial moisture, while it varied in JC bag. Due to impervious nature of PL-JC bag, the rate of lipid peroxidation and free radicals formation were slow. This leads to maintenance of membrane integrity, results in slow leakage of intracellular substances. This might be the reason for maintenance of seed germination in PL-JC bag during storage.
