After the 1973 middle-east oil crisis, the OECD countries were in a rush to develop their nuclear power capability in a big way. Most of the effort was based on BWR's and PWR's using 3-4 per cent enriched uranium fuel and ordinary water as moderator. As a legacy of that boom the OECD countries at present (prior to Fukushima) have 344 reactors in operation with a total capacity of 315 GWe, whereas all the 30 countries of the world taking into account the Russian bloc and the developing countries as well, included in this statistics, have 442 on-line reactors with a total capacity of 375 Gwe as reported up to January, 2011.
