Vinyl Ester Resin Nanocomposites Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes Modified Basalt Fibers

Both carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs) and C-MWCNTs coupled with KH550 (KH550-MWCNTs) were prepared and applied to basalt fiber fabric (BF) surface to improve the mechanical properties of BF/vinyl ester resin (VE) composites. Both kinds of MWCNTs were coated on the surface of the BF effectively. Compared with unmodified BF/VE composites, all related mechanical properties, including flexure strength, impact strength and type II interlaminar fracture toughness of the composites were improved. The significant improvements on materials materials properties were attributed to the grating process which had the dispersion of MWCNTs on the fiber cloth and strong interaction between the fibers and the matrix.
