This book, Constructing Leadership: Reflections on Film Heroes as Leaders, looks at leadership through the lens of nine popular feature films. Seven of these are American studio productions, while the remaining two are Swedish. The films have all been widely distributed and are easily accessible. The book is an essay on leadership rather than a film guide, and the authors approach their subject in an appropriately straightforward way: rent a movie, watch it and write a leadership chapter about it. While this may seem like just another opportunity for devoted moviegoers, Bjorn Rombach and Rolf Solli-both of them Scandinavian management scholars-intend more than this: they see their three-step method as a way of teaching and learning: they want videos to be included with other academic publications among the course requirements for leadership students, since adding fiction entertainment to leadership education can transform dry lessons into good academic edutainment. Rombach and Solli contend that popular films facilitate leadership education in the same way that good novels can teach better management.
