Lifeboat problems on bulk carriers

In August 2000 and January 2001 separate incidents involving lifeboat drills took place on two bulk carriers, the 74,228 tonne dw Washington Trader and 65,850 tonne dw Alianthos respectively. In each case there were no casualties to the crew but they both highlight, once again, many of the problems associated with the maintenance, training and operation of lifeboats.
