Radar manufacturers offering systems capable of displaying AIS targets are meeting a need but are taking a calculated commercial risk in the absence of agreed performance standards. The demand for radars capable of displaying AIS targets has escalated following the universal realisation that the Minimum Keyboard Display available as the basic option for AIS installations is too small to be of any practical value. It is becoming increasingly apparent that shipowners believe that if they are now compelled to carry an AIS it ought to be of some use. Radar manufacturers have been quick to offer products that integrate AIS and radar targets but are doing so in the realisation that their choice of solution might be the wrong one.
