More than 50 sailors aboard a 20-year-old Russian-built submarine belonging to the Indian Navy had a narrow escape off Gujarat coast on 7 January when a merchant ship sailed over it. Submarines run blind in the sea, relying on the radar to alert them to approaching vessels and on undersea naval charts to avoid running into oceanic mountains and reefs. India does not have deepsea rescue vehicles, although the navy has initiated steps to buy some.
