A project called 'alternative boat hook design' by deck engineer trainee Keir Gravil won first prize and a cheque for £1,000 in the 2008 British Shipping Safety Awareness Awards. In his entry, 22-year-old Gravil, who trained with Clyde Marine and was sponsored by Maersk Marine Services, showed a new design for a lifeboat hook-releasing mechanism that enables rescue craft to be released and reattached to ships quickly and easily.
