A safe return to port (SRTP) by a passengerrnvessel that has suffered a serious acddent might be a sluggish and cautious process, but the regulations bringing SRTP to fruition have undergone an equally slow and deliberate passage into law. The regulations that came into force on 1 July 2010 have been a long time in development at the IMO. The Maritime Safety Committee initiated a review of passenger ship safety back in 2000 and the new rules were finally approved six years later.
