Operating and maintenance procedures that are fit forrnpurpose are crucial to shipping safety. With increasing use of automation and remote diagnostics, the opportunities for seafarers to develop intuitive knowledge of equipment and systems have diminished. This move away from hands-on interaction towards passive monitoring means that robust procedures are essential: in the absence of learned experience, procedures need to be introduced restricting the operational pathways a seafarer can go down.
