The cruise industry is unwilling to pay for dedicated man overboard (MOB) systems that detect a falling individual, according to some equipment sellers and passenger advocates. The issue is a critical one because the US Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA) mandates that cruise ships must have a MOB monitoring system in place by 27 January 2012.Industry group the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) countered the criticism by citing the CVSSA, which states that vessels "shall integrate technology that can be used for capturing images of passengers or detecting passengers who have fallen overboard, to the extent such technology is available".
