Furuno targets Asia ECDIS training

Japanese marine electronics maker Furuno is to open an Integrated Navigation System (INS) training centre in Singapore. The centre, the company's first in Asia, builds on the success of Furuno's pioneer INSTC in Copenhagen, which was set up in 2005. The company said it wants to meet the challenge of expanding the competence of navigators to meet the demands they will face as the deadline for mandatory adoption of ECDIS nears. "We felt that, due to the sophistication of the equipment that we were supplying to the ships, there was a need for more thorough training," said Mads Friis Sorensen, branch manager at Furuno European Branch Office.
