Analysis of seafarers' responses in the SIRC survey indicates that: 1. accommodation standards, even on new ships, may have deteriorated in the past five years 2. seafarer cabins are often cramped, unattractive and ill-equipped, offering seafarers little or no control over light, heat, noise and vibration 3. one in five seafarers has no access to communal libraries of DVDs and books onboard 4. seafarer access to communications facilities such as internet, email, and phone is typically very poor 5. besides improved communications access, respondents desire gyms, games, satellite TV, and swimming pools onboard.
