The dry bulk carrier fleet is the largest sector of the world fleet by deadweight tonnage. Sometimes described as the workhorse of international shipping, it is perhaps better denned as the backbone of industry itself. It is certainly a great example of the specialised nature of shipping. Bulk carriers are relatively simple in design but are perfectly developed for the mass transport of resources, providing considerable economies of scale for the movement of bulk materials.
