摘要

Driven mostly by more stringent international requirements, the nature of training and crewing has evolved in such a way that seafarers have to satisfy more demands to be able to work on board merchant vessels. Whether the corresponding training and education currently available are sufficient to meet these new set of requirements, is another matter. Simon Frank, fleet personnel director of Wallem Shipmanagment, tells SAS that the industry must have a "realistic" expectation based on what seafarers could get from their training. "If you visualise two graphs, the one which represents the general requirements is building and building," while the other chart which represents the skills of the seafarers, is not levelling up as much, he explained.
