OPINION:THE CYBORG CREW

As I write this the world's TV screens are filled with images of devastation from the islands of the Philippines wrought by typhoon Haiyan, of which an estimated 35% of Filipino seafarers are native. Ironically for those seafarers who risk their lives daily at sea, it is now their families and loved ones who are bearing the brunt of Mother Nature. As we enter a new era of technology which will allow us to mitigate risk for seafarers and their vessels in a far more intelligent way than ever before. A range of trends are beginning to converge which are shaping shipping's technology-enabled future and, taken together they provide significant opportunities to better protect and enable its most valuable assets - namely crew and their vessels - to work at their optimum level.
