Peace Ark is China's only hospital ship, after two other similar but older ships were taken out of service. The 14,000dwt vessel belongs to China's South Sea Fleet, which is based in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, and is the People's Liberation Army's first specially designed hospital ship. When not in operation, the ship normally has 113 crew members and a medical complement of 20. Those numbers climb to 328 crew members and 100 medical personnel during a mission. With eight operating theatres on board, up to 40 major operations can be performed in a day. The ship has 20 beds in its intensive care unit and 300 regular hospital beds.
