When the first issue of Safety at Sea arrived in the hands of its readers 50 years ago, they were likely to have been seafarers working for a ship flying his - there were barely any 'hers' at that time - national flag, in a well-established company operated by a shipowner of his native country. He would be surrounded by scores of mates on board and fully protected by unions.
