Global distribution company TNT Logistics UK and WH Smith have been fined after a man lost part of a finger in an unsafe practice involving a forklift truck. Sitting on 3 November, Reading Magistrates' Court heard in two separate prosecutions that Paul Mappley, who was employed by TNT, had been driving an articulated vehicle delivering newspapers and supplements to WH Smith's distribution warehouse in Slough on 4 January 2003. On arrival, Mr Mappley pulled open the curtains of the trailer while a WH Smith employee started to offload newspapers on pallets.
