The oil and gas industry faces a unique set of challenges in relation to behavioural safety. The supply chain offers complex, interdependent relationships between producers and contractors (with each organisation having its own safety culture). The nature of the work itself (involving geographical and environmental challenges) creates patterns of communication (e.g. between offshore and onshore workers) that can limit opportunities for sharing knowledge and good practice. Furthermore, the workforce is typically highly mobile and culturally and socially diverse, with a rich mix of languages, cultural habits and expectations.
