I read Diane Fox's letter (Mailshot, September) with interest, and I felt drawn to make the following observations: 1. The UK's record on employee safety is one of the best and, clearly the health and safety system in the UK is working well. Why discard something that is working? 2. The HSE is not a bunch of self-appointed guardians of worker safety. Their remit, roles and responsibilities were, and are, defined by the HSWA. 3. It would appear from the journals that developing occupational health is an ad hoc process, with a number of organisations lobbying and promoting their own particular causes. Perhaps the HSE's role should be expanded to drive this development, rather than responding to the work of others.
