IOSH supports TfL initiative to cut cyclist deaths in London

IOSH is backing a new Transport for London (TfL) standard, aimed at cutting the number of construction heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) involved in cyclist deaths, in London. Representatives from IOSH attended an event, opened by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, at London's Living Room, City Hall, recently, to demonstrate the progress made by the construction and logistics industry to improve safety on the road. Steve Clark, chair of the IOSH's Retail and Distribution Group, said: "Improved training and designing safety into vehicles and logistics helps to save lives and increase efficiency. We're pleased to support this initiative and help promote these new standards through our membership." Everyday nearly 600,000 cycle trips are made in London, with numbers continuing to rise year-on-year. Between 2008 and 2012, 53 per cent of cycling fatalities in London involved HGVs.
