Certain Features of the 2005 Season of Tropical Cyclones

Certain features of the 2005 season of tropical cyclones are discussed on the basis of a process of monitoring of tropical cyclones performed at the Division of Global Analysis and Weather Forecasting of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia and a comparison with the 1970-1999 data bank of Tropical Cyclones of the World Ocean. Whereas in the five regions subject to tropical cyclones the season may be considered to be close to the norm, with respect to many indicators the hurricane season in the northern Atlantic reached record levels. This may possibly be due to multi-decade variations in conditions that promote the formation of a large number of tropical cyclones and more severe tropical cyclones with anomalously warm ocean surface and weak wind shear in the lower half of the troposphere.
