Landers received a BA in health and physical education and recreation with a minor in mineralogy from the University of Washington (1964). The first steps are to make a pencil drawing of a specimen and then outline it with pen-and-ink; next, details are added, and, finally, colored pencils are used to bring the specimen to life.
